What's Patrick reading? pt. 2

I’ve expanded my social media presence and thought much about how therapists use various platforms. In following other therapists on Instagram and maintaining my own I discovered lots of content circulating, particularly concerning self-care.

I’ve been leery in embracing the term and worry it’s the latest pop psychology locution — maybe it’s taking the mantle of the last top-dog and '“over-hyped” term ‘mindfulness’. And this led to an article I referenced in a previous blog posting, “Self Care: Away from Productivity and Towards Leisure,” that discusses the pitfalls around the gathering forces of the Self-Care Army.

Dazed Digital asks, “Is your self-care practice fueling your burnout?” And it’s an excellent article worthy of a read.

I also wrote recently about the Therapeutic Utilization of Tarot Cards after reading the excellent New York Times Article, “Now Therapists Have to Figure Out Astrology, Tarot and Psychedelics.” The article struck a chord with me because Tarot and astrology comes up a lot more than I’d been trained to think it would in the therapy room when studying to become a therapist, so much in fact that I think it ought to be a part of core curriculum during religion and spirituality sections at the university level.

Living in South Florida reminds me that spiritual traditions are so diverse and as I prepared for Hurricane Dorian last week I was excited to see coverage about how faith impacts our actions before a storm. WLRN showcased this with: “In Miami, Afro-Caribbean Saints and Spirits Are Part Of Hurricane Prep.”

I’ve continued my own spiritual exploration through a Pinterest where I’ve been developing my own content. While I have many boards on Depression or Anxiety Management with worksheets and inspirational graphics, I’ve also had fun creating content tied to my interest in Catholicism and Zen practice.

The Future Fossils podcast continues to excite me and 124 - Norman "Dr. Blue" Katz on Hypnosis & The Mind is a doozy. Milton Erickson makes an appearance, Gestalt therapy, and LSD. Hypnosis is something I offer clients (disclaimer: Gestalt therapy and LSD is something I AM NOT offering) and you can read more about that here.

There’s lots more that I’m reading! You can find some of the articles I post on my Twitter or my Facebook page.
